EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE THROUGH LITERATURE
(Encouraging language learner to explore the use of language)
In the classroom, student often feel uninterested, they do not enjoy excitement in studying the language. It is because of the traditional view of the teacher about language learning. They perceive that teaching language means teaching formal grammar. Beside that, the worksheets that monotonous kill the enthusiasm of studying the language. One of the classroom language learning designs is by connecting language learning with young adult literature. It will affect them to experience the language and to explore the way how the language works. Herein the student and teacher will investigate the nature of the language which will interest them. Young adult literature provides a source for chronological point of view how is English used in literature. In this way the language classroom will be much more meaningful and alive because the language observed herein.
In literature, Students will consider the nonverbal language, and other using language devise. They will find the language more colourful because the author uses various language models to make the writing interesting. In doing this, their will arise the question about the character in the literary and how is the way they portrayed by the author. The student can learn about how the author uses language to show the element, and personality of the character thorough the exploration to the literature, and yet the author often use vocabulary, idioms, syntax, and general style in their writing to reflect the culture and society what they are writing. There from the student will be informed about the dialect of various regional that give student comprehension about the language and more appreciate it. Both student and teacher can examine how do authors use the dialect in their writing through literature they read.
One of the interesting topic to be discuss in classroom is the black dialect which has its own feature which differ with the English dialect, the differences including optional copula deletion, negative concord, invariant be, dummy it and negative inversion, which are often use by the authors in their writing to express a momentary condition and a current action or state, such can be found in particular literature. by connecting the language and literature, the student will be encouraged to explore the language and how do the author use the language to colour their writing, as the result, student will arise their enthusiasm to learn language and excited to explore the use of language in literature.
